Sioni temple - by Kakha Mchedlidze1599 viewsSioni Cathedral in Old Tbilisi has preserved St. Nino's Cross, the most valuable holy relic of the Georgian Orthodox Church. The original church was built in the later half of the 5th century by King Vakhtang Gorgasali. A new church was built on this site at the turn of the 7th century. Sioni has undergone several destructions and rebuildings. Sioni Cathedral is of an inscribed-cross type. The church plan has not changed since the 12th century. The dome with sixteen windows was built in 1710. The facade masonry stones are also of a later period. The walls of the church were painted by Grigol Gagarin in the 19th century, while the west part was painted by Levan Tsutskiridze in the 20th century.
